Veterans Upward Bound

Program Description
Veterans Upward Bound is designed to motivate and assist veterans in the development of academic and other requisite skills necessary for acceptance and success in a program of postsecondary education. The program provides assessment and enhancement of basic skills through counseling, mentoring, tutoring and academic instruction in the core subject areas. The primary goal of the program is to increase the rate at which participants enroll in and complete postsecondary education programs.
The primary purpose of the program is to provide basic academic instruction, support services and motivation for veterans who desire to enroll in post secondary education. All services are free of charge to eligible veterans.
The program serves all veterans - peacetime and wartime who have served 181 days with other than dishonorable discharge who are either first-generation college and/or low-income veterans
Program Services:
1. Needs Assessment - Upon enrollment, participants will be tested to determine an appropriate starting place to begin their educational journey.
2. Basic Academic Instructions- Academic instructions in reading, writing, math and computer literacy are provided; instruction is individualized based upon the participant's needs and goals. We offer three off campus sites as well as computerized training at UWM.
3. Academic Counseling- Veterans will have help finding the educational programs and institutions that is best for them.
4. Post-secondary Institution Enrollment Assistance- Professional advice, counseling and advocacy will be provided to ease the process of admission to the program or institution of choice.
5. Cultural Enrichment- Participants will have an opportunity to broaden their experiences through participation in various culturally diverse community activities.
